Privacy law covers a vast and increasing range of areas and topics: data protection, human rights, identity theft, financial information, medical records, biometric data, employment information, monitoring of internet usage, online advertising, use of online social networks and more.

This study aims to provide an overview of privacy law in the UK as it relates to most people in their everyday lives. This means that the developing area of privacy via court injunction will be omitted, focus instead being on legislation made by Parliament and the Executive which by turns promotes and threatens the privacy of individuals.

Why Privacy?

Why is privacy important? Isn't privacy dead? What does it mean, and how has its meaning changed?
