Social media intelligence

Social media intelligence (abbreviated as SOCMINT) refers to intelligence gathered from social media sites, from both open and closed social networks.

Some indication of the extent that SOCMINT is used by the Metropolitan Police came to light in 2013.[1] Following the 2011 London-riots, 17 officers of National Domestic Extremism Unit were tasked with monitoring traffic on sites such as Twitter and YouTube.
