RIPA Submission

In 2006 the government invited responses to the Draft Code of Practice for the Investigation of Protected Electronic Information: Part III of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 - more commonly known as RIPA.

After a vast number of emails and working with Foundation for Information Policy Research (FIPR) the Open Rights Group submitted the following statement, endorsing the FIPR response.

ORG Submission

The Open Rights Group endorses the Foundation for Information Policy Research response to the Home Office consultation on the Draft Code of Practice for the Investigation of Protected Electronic Information. In particular we wish to affirm that Part III of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 should not be activated: rather it should be replaced by a technology neutral solution.

We also endorse the Foundation for Information Policy Research response to the Home Office consultation on the Revised Statutory Code for Acquisition and Disclosure of Communications Data - Chapter II of Part I of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000. We welcome the public drafting of this Code as a vital step towards adequate implementation of this legislation. However, a number of central clauses must be clarified before Parliament is asked to approve the document.
