National Trading Standards
National Trading Standards was set up in 2012 as the result of government policy to provide better consumer protection in the UK.
Governance
National Trading Standards is a private company, owned by the Trading Standards Institute.
It is not subject to FoI.
Funding
NTS receives funding from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and the Food Standards Authority.
Website takedowns and domain suspensions
NTS makes website takedown and domain suspension requests. It says that, in 2016-17:
Over 140 websites were linked to the scams which were submitted for domain suspension and/or take down by the relevant domain registries and hosting companies[1]
The majority of these would have been made to Nominet. NTS is allowed by Nominet to make domain suspension requests. They make a significant number of requests, currently over 100 a year, according to Nominet’s annual report statistics.
