Metadata is the who, where and when of a communication. In electronic communications, metadata is generated and usually stored as communications are transmitted.
Storage could be for error checking (debugging) or billing purposes. Metadata can be stored under data retention laws.
Analysis of metadata can reveal a great deal about individuals, their actions, networks and beliefs.
