Claude Moraes MEP

Claude Moraes is a British Labour Party Member of the European Parliament, representing London and currently the Rapporteur of the European Parliament's Inquiry on mass surveillance.

Data Protection

In an interview for the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, Mr. Moraes talked at length on the subject of data protection. He said that “the law on data protection has not kept pace with the sheer level of data going out. For that reason, there needs to be across the European Union a settlement both on data in the private sector and in the public sector...a way of protecting people without in any way harming the market place and information.” He goes on to state that the S&D group in the European Parliament wishes to “see how far we can go in the way that we can erase our footprints.”[1]

ACTA

Mr. Moraes voted against ACTA.

PRISM

I was appointed Rapporteur of the European Parliament's Inquiry on mass surveillance of electronic communication of EU citizens. This will look into the issue of recent PRISM and NSA allegations but also the future of data protection legislation for the European Union. I will produce a report on this by Christmas[1]
