Issues

Id Cards

Voted in favour of the bill. Does not think that ID cards per se pose a significant additional risk to civil liberties.

Communications Data Bill

Opposes the bill in its current (email dated 11 July 2012) state.

"Fortunately, for the moment at least, the Bill only in the draft stages so there is no chance of it coming into law in the next year, but the issue is still very much a live one, and I am hopeful that some serious changes can be brought so as to limit the Bills scope significantly. It risks a dangerous escalation in the power of the state to know what citizens are doing and is unjustified by any independent research. It must also be noted that it is also completely contrary to what Coalition parties promised. While there is an obvious national security interest, and a desire for effective policing, there must still remain strong safeguards on the privacy of individuals."
