Communications and New Media Intern

The Open Rights Group is a non-profit organisation that campaigns to defend freedom of expression, privacy, innovation, consumer rights and creativity on the internet. We're seeking a Communications and New Media Intern (volunteer), who will support our growing online community, campaigns work and our digital rights magazine (ORGZine), the forum for debate that compliments the Open Rights Group's main website.

You will:

  • Be the key figure on our Social Networks
  • Write and edit blogs for ORGZine
  • Research and source content for ORGzine
  • Collaborate with ORG staff on creative ways of promoting and expanding the zine
  • Write email updates to our volunteers

Skills required:

  • Excellent proof-reading and copywriting skills
  • Some research skills
  • Some experience in web development (eg HTML/CSS)
  • Interest in issues relating to digital rights (including free speech, data protection, privacy, open data, etc)
  • Some interest in culture, arts and tech
  • Be able to work independently
  • Be creative and enthusiastic about communicating with a wide audience of supporters & lobbyists

The position is voluntary, but aimed to help you gain skills and confidence. You will be able to implement changes, write original content and discuss communications development. This is a great opportunity for aspiring writers/editors or those interested in technological issues to make their mark.

The position is for three days a week for three months (subject to paid employment). You will be working from our office in London.


Parliamentary and Policy Intern

We are looking for a parliamentary intern with a research background to monitor UK and EU policy developments.

You will be responsible for managing a weekly bulletin which will keep our stakeholders and activists up to date with upcoming legislation, discussion and developments in parliament, relating to ORG issues. This role represents a great opportunity to be involved in our policy work and have responsibility for a significant project.

You will:

  • Write weekly bulletins while Parliament is sitting
  • Research debates in the house that mention ORG issues
  • Write profiles of MPs and debates
  • Update ORG’s Wiki
  • Write full analytical reports of policy development
  • Update our parliamentary timetable
  • Attend public Parliamentary meetings relevant to our work

Skills required:

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong online research skills
  • Ability to work well independently
  • Good organisation and time management skills
  • Strong interest in Open Rights Group's aims & goals

The position is voluntary, but aimed at helping you gain skills and confidence. You will be able to implement changes, discuss policy development, and publish your findings online.

Research/Legal research internship

We are looking for a research intern with a legal background to look at protection of online privacy rights, Intellectual Property rights, and digitisation of the public domain.

Your research will form the bedrock of our campaigning work, and also represents an opportunity to be involved in our online campaigning, blogging, social media and video work.

Campaigns Intern

We're seeking a Campaigns Intern who will support our growing online community, media and campaigns. This will give you a prime opportunity to gain the broad skillset necessary to run a successful campaign.

Ideally, you will:

  • Co-ordinate volunteer projects with our supporters
  • Write copy for the website
  • Campaign research
  • Run campaign web presence
  • Plan actions & campaign ideas
  • Help develop campaign strategy
  • Provide essential administrative support

Skills required:

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong online research skills
  • Ability to work well independently
  • Good Organisation and time management skills
  • Creative
  • Strong interest in Open Rights Group's aims & goals
